Building Air Pressure
Now, let’s start building up the air pressure in the system. Start the tractor’s engine and let it run for a bit to build up the air pressure in the tractor’s air system. The air pressure should reach the normal operating range, which is usually around 100 – 120 psi. You can monitor the pressure on the tractor’s air pressure gauges.
Once the tractor’s air pressure is up, connect the tractor to the semi – trailer using the air lines. There are usually two air lines: the service line and the emergency line. Make sure they’re properly connected and secured. After connecting the lines, wait a few minutes for the air to flow from the tractor to the trailer and build up pressure in the trailer’s air system.
Testing the Air Pressure Build – Up
After waiting for the air to flow, check the trailer’s air pressure gauges (if it has them). The pressure should start to increase steadily. If the pressure doesn’t build up or builds up very slowly, there might be a problem with the air lines, a valve, or a leak in the trailer’s air system.
To further test the air pressure build – up, you can do a quick test by applying the trailer brakes lightly. When you apply the brakes, the air pressure should drop a little bit, and then quickly recover once you release the brakes. If the pressure doesn’t recover or keeps dropping, there’s likely an issue with the brake system.
Checking the Emergency Brake System
The emergency brake system is a critical part of the semi – trailer’s air brake system. To test it, first, make sure the tractor’s engine is running and the air pressure is normal. Then, pull out the trailer’s emergency brake control valve (usually a red knob). When you do this, the trailer’s brakes should engage. You can try to gently rock the trailer back and forth to confirm that the brakes are holding.
To release the emergency brakes, push the emergency brake control valve back in. The brakes should release, and you’ll feel the trailer become more movable. If the emergency brakes don’t engage or release properly, it could be due to a problem with the emergency brake valve, air lines, or brake chambers.
Testing the Service Brake System
The service brake system is what you use for normal braking while driving. To test it, drive the semi – trailer at a slow speed (like 5 – 10 mph) on a safe and flat surface. Apply the brakes gently and gradually. You should feel the trailer slow down smoothly. Pay attention to how the brakes respond. There shouldn’t be any sudden jolts or pulling to one side.
If you feel any pulling, it could mean that the brakes on one side are working better than the other. This could be due to a stuck brake chamber, a problem with the air distribution, or worn brake linings. If the brakes don’t seem to be working effectively at all, there might be a major issue with the service brake system.
Testing the Low – Air Warning Device
The low – air warning device is designed to alert you when the air pressure in the system drops below a safe level. To test this, slowly drain the air from the system using the tractor’s drain valves. As the air pressure drops, the low – air warning device, which is usually a buzzer or a light on the dashboard, should activate at a certain pressure level (usually around 60 psi).
Once the warning device activates, stop draining the air and let the system build up pressure again. The warning should go off once the pressure reaches a safe level. If the low – air warning device doesn’t work properly, it needs to be fixed right away because it’s an important safety feature.
Checking the Brake Chambers
The brake chambers are responsible for converting the air pressure into mechanical force to apply the brakes. To check them, you can do a visual inspection. Look for any signs of damage like dents, cracks, or leaks in the brake chambers. Also, check the pushrods. When the brakes are applied, the pushrods should extend a certain amount. If they extend too much or not enough, it could indicate a problem with the brake adjustment or the brake chamber itself.
You can also do a simple test by applying the brakes and then using a ruler to measure the pushrod travel. Compare the measurement to the manufacturer’s specifications. If the pushrod travel is outside the recommended range, the brakes need to be adjusted.
Final Checks and Maintenance
After completing all the tests, do a final visual check of the entire air brake system. Make sure all the connections are tight, there are no new leaks, and all the components are in good working condition. If you found any issues during the testing, make the necessary repairs or adjustments as soon as possible.

Regular maintenance is also key to keeping the air brake system in top shape. This includes draining the air tanks regularly to remove moisture, lubricating moving parts, and replacing worn – out components.
